When it comes to contemporary automobiles with subtle, yet refined style, the Hyundai Sonata sits just at the top of the list.

This borderline luxury sedan is one of the most comfortable and stylish sedans on the market today. While it may not be the most stand-out in terms of expression and performance, it is a treat to drive and perfect for any economic-minded buyer.

Entering the Market – The Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata was originally sculpted by Giorgetto Giugiaro, a world-famous automotive stylist that works with the ItalDesign firm. It used many of the main components from the Stellar model. Though it was released in 1985, it did not hit the United States until 1989.

Pure Performance and Technology of the Hyundai Sonata

The 2019 Hyundai Sonata comes with a choice of five different powertrains, two of which are hybrids. One of the hybrids is a plug-in model. The base-level Sonata comes with a 2.4L four-cylinder engine that is paired up with a six-speed automatic transmission. This four-cylinder engine is able to put out 185 horsepower and is surprisingly quiet. The most powerful engine in the lineup is a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine.

On the inside, you get comfortable seating and an easy-to-use interface with climate and audio controls. The top trim provides leather seating, automatic climate control, and power-adjustable front seats. Drivers have the choice of upgrading to an 8.0” touchscreen infotainment system as well, which comes complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Through Many Generations of the Hyundai Sonata

  • First Generation Hyundai Sonata (1985-1988)

The first-generation Hyundai Sonata was made to compete with the Royale from Daewoo. The engine choices included a 1.6L, 1.8L, and 2.0L inline-four.

  • Second Generation Hyundai Sonata (1988-1993)

The second-generation Hyundai Sonata was the successor to the Excel in North America. It was marketed as Hyundai’s large family car with two trim levels, which included 2.0L and 2.4L engines.

  • Third Generation Hyundai Sonata (1993-1998)

The third-generation engine was upgraded to a 3.0 V-6 engine. Hyundai restyled the car a bit to help move it into the upmarket sector. The headlight design was made to be very similar to Mercedes and Jaguar.

  • Fourth Generation Hyundai Sonata (1998-2004)

The fourth-generation saw a major style change similar to the Ford Taurus. A 2.4L Sirius engine and a 2.5L Delta V-6 were added to the engine lineup. By 2001, the car received an all-aluminum engine.

  • Fifth Generation Hyundai Sonata (2004-2009)

The fifth-generation Sonata came on a new NF Project platform with a new 2.4L Theta engine. Singapore began equipping their taxicabs with the same engines.

  • Sixth Generation Hyundai Sonata (2009-2014)

The sixth-generation finally hit a more premium market with a redesigned exterior and a modern entertainment system on the interior.

  • Seventh Generation Hyundai Sonata (2014-2019)

The seventh-generation Sonata came with even more aggressive looks with the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language. The interior received a redesigned dashboard and infotainment system.

  • Eighth Generation Hyundai Sonata (2019-Present)

By 2019, the car received a total front fascia facelift with LED lights, as well as an interior facelift with a new instrument panel.
