When it comes to affordable transportation, the first thing people think of is your standard, boring economy car.

The Chevrolet Spark aims to disprove that entire predisposition. This miniature hatchback provides drivers with a charming interior and a pleasant, engaging driving experience.

The Beginnings of the Chevrolet Spark

The Chevrolet Spark is a city car that was produced by General Motors in Korea, and originally went under the “Matiz” name. The first-generation Matiz launched back in 1998 when the company was known as Daewoo Motors.

The Technology of a Small Wonder – The Chevrolet Spark

The 2019 Chevrolet Spark comes with a small four-cylinder engine that uses front-wheel-drive. It is available in either a five-speed manual transmission or continuously variable automatic transmission. It is fairly slow with a 0-60 time of about 10.7 seconds, though once it gets going, the car is stable and smooth.

The entry-level Spark comes with a 7.0” touchscreen infotainment system and a 4G LTE mobile hotspot. There is a measly 11 cubic feet of cargo space and a variety of driver-assistance features, including available lane-departure warning, available forward-collision warning, and available rear parking sensors.

The Chevrolet Spark Through Generations

  • First Generation Chevrolet Spark (1998-2005)

The first-generation Spark was known as the Matiz. It had a 0.8L gasoline engine with a multipoint injection fuel system. The car had a maximum horsepower of 51 and was available in five-door hatchback and five-door panel van designs.

  • Second Generation Chevrolet Spark (2005-2009)

The second-generation Spark was significantly redesigned with S-Tec engines, better fuel economy, and an upgraded drag coefficient. The center-mounted instrument cluster was added as well, and the platform was upgraded with twist-beam rear suspension.

  • Third Generation Chevrolet Spark (2009-2015)

The third-generation Spark was a bit more sporty with a motorbike-inspired instrument panel and a new 1.2L turbocharged engine. The electric version became available to limited markets as well.

  • Fourth Generation Chevrolet Spark (2016-Present)

The fourth-generation Spark is powered by a 1.4L DOHC engine and comes with either a manual transmission or CVT. Low-speed forward automatic braking became standard on new models as well.

The Chevrolet Spark In the News

In recent and unfortunate Chevrolet news, a woman in Fairland was hurt when her 2014 Chevrolet Spark flew off the roadway and struck a culvert.

Celebrity Endorsements of the Chevrolet Spark

Though the Chevrolet Spark has been featured in the Transformers series, it wasn’t enough to get any serious celebrity endorsements for the car.
